I reproduce, below, are excerpts adapted by me, an article in "Echoes of Israel "(see link to the source at the bottom of page) article that mentions the Catholic thinker Jacques Maritain judéophile. Jacques Maritain as I usually nicknamed "my elder brother in the Catholic Zionism": "Recognized in Europe and the Americas as the foremost representative of Catholic thought in the 20th century, Jacques Maritain [1882-1973] was by its commitments most varied, constantly present in the great debates of his time. Translated into several languages, the book master "integral humanism ', laid the foundations for a new Christianity, no more' sacred 'as the Middle Ages, but' secular 'and open to the values of the modern world. The day of his death, his friend, Pope Paul VI said of him: "He was a master in the art of thinking, living, praying." In this connection, an anecdote that occurred during the Pope's visit in India does not fail to be illuminating. Indeed, during a private interview with President Shastri, Paul VI was moved to hear say quite simply 'My mentor, Jacques Maritain!' because he could have made the same admission.
-
Given his stance against the onslaught of Nazism, in Germany, it is not surprising that following the occupation of the area north of the country, one of the first steps of the Gestapo was to contact the Institute Catholique in Paris to ask where was the teacher of philosophy. As he was already speaking tour in Canada, he wished to return to France to attend to the suffering of his family, but his disciple and friend, Abbe Charles Journet - now later Cardinal - telephoned him declare bluntly: "I order you to stay where you are!".
-
It would be superfluous to state that broke from the start with the noxious atmosphere of the Vichy regime. During the war, Maritain's apartment in New York, became a haven of peace where many casualties resulted from the 'New Idea' a title which the Nazi party loved to wrap himself. The art historian, Focillon, the Nobel Sigri Undset, Chagall, Elizabeth Miribel, secretary to the chief of 'Free France', and many others still came here to recharge. From there, left as many visa applications as its prestige allowed him to do for Jewish intellectuals who were desperate means to leave a continent has become inhospitable. The voluntary exile could later evoke the oppressive climate of the time. 'Years of New York, besieged by despair while the swastika was triumphant in Europe, he still had to support the hearts (and that's when Raisa, who was Jewish and the wife of Jacques Maritain, had the injury the most cruel, burning the mind at the sight of the agony of the oppressed and persecuted, and the horror of a world that seemed to abandon God) '.
-
The manifesto that he published shortly after the 1940 defeat: 'Through the disaster, had such an impact on the first volunteers of the Resistance he was asked to institutionalize its aid to supporters of Free France . Thus began the long series of posts that 'Radio London' broadcast every week in connection with the issue 'The French speak French to where Andrew Welsh and John Marin watched over the flame. It was one of the highlights of these programs announced by the initial pattern - Fate knocks at the door - the Fifth Symphony of Beethoven. Morse code designating the letter 'V', the signal-Pan Pan-Pan-pam intended to remind the enemy - in his own language - he was not alone in thinking of the Victory.
-
Not surprisingly, with such conditions of service, the country would once again appeal to him asking him to assume, from 1945 to 1948, the ambassador of France to the Holy See. "I got home, he said in New York on 1 January 1945, having failed to abandon de Gaulle and GB, then Minister of Foreign Affairs, for their project to appoint me ambassador to the Vatican. Accepting that I was morally obliged by their insistence, and the feeling that I could not shirk a task requested on behalf of the country still at war had reduced to a kind of despair. "
-
A faithful witness - No Christian has ever found, as Jacques Maritain's own words to touch the sensibilities of Israel. Having attended quite a few, Karl Stern was well placed to speak. "No member of the Church he said, seemed to have never understood with equal penetration the Jewish problem. He spoke with a peculiar vagueness, making light touch rather than assertions, and yet everything he said gave an impression of substance and clarity. I felt from the first minute the feeling of a direct personal strangely pleasant and was the result of a lot of charity and humility. " Innate foresight had led to see in Nazism hysteria deleterious trends. The moment the shadow of manchineel poisoned the sap began to expand, he feared that the people elected would become the first victim of his evil presence. Also, do not we do better than allow such a thinker about the drama which he could not think of pain without vertigo.
-
Excerpts from a lecture given in Paris at the Théâtre des Ambassadeurs, February 5, 1938: "Anti-Semitism appears to be a pathological phenomenon which reveals an alteration of the Christian conscience when it becomes incapable of making their own responsibilities in the history, and remain faithful to the high existentially requirements of Christian truth. So, instead of recognizing in the trials and terrors of history the visitation of God, and to undertake the tasks of justice and charity required by that very fact, it falls back on the ghosts of substitution for an entire race, which certain specific excuses, justified or not, he used to give consistency, and giving vent to feelings of hatred she feels justified by religion, it seeks for itself a kind of alibi. . "To stoke the fire that burns the bad people, there is in Europe today, those who want the extermination and death and the extermination of the Jews first - because that is what it is, is not it, ultimately? - And which, under the unit of scientism stupid racist or forged documents, hidden to other men, and sometimes to themselves, the mad hope of a general massacre of the race of Moses and Jesus. The massacre remains a dream, the seeds of hate that fill the atmosphere are a reality. It would take a lot of love and a spirit of justice and charity to clean up this atmosphere. "
- Excerpts from a
lecture given at the Theatre Marigny, February 8, 1939: "Commenting on the words of the Canon of the Mass Sacrificium Patriarchae nostri Abrahae, the sacrifice of Abraham our Father, Pope (Pius XI) exclaimed:" Note that Abraham is called our patriarch, our ancestor. Anti-Semitism is incompatible with the lofty thought and reality that are expressed here. It is a movement in which we Christians can have no part. Spiritually we are Semites. "Spiritually we are Semites: no stronger word has been pronounced by a Christian against anti-Semitism, and this is the Christian successor of the apostle Peter. " "Our time to offer unheard treats homicidal demons. [... ] The huge roar that rises from the concentration camps is not perceptible to our ears, but it penetrates the fibers of the hidden life of the world and the unseen vibration tears. "
-
If that is sublime in JM denouncing the crimes of racism, the evocation of his thought would be incomplete if we failed to remember what he wrote about the state of Israel a few years after his foundation. At the end of a work in which he summarized his views on anti-Semitism, he wondered about the possibility of reconciling the nodal direction of Judaism with the reality of a state surrounded by enemies ruthless and cynical. In the introduction to the Mystery of Israel, yet he recognized its limitations facing such a venture: "Actually, I was hoping that before I could bring these texts speak of a sufficient depth of a subject - the State of Israel - without which the study can not be properly treated now with respect to the Jewish people. I had I merely propose the thoughts that I think are essential, while apologizing to address in a way too brief a great subject. "
-
In June 1947, his wife, Raissa Maritain, composed the poem entitled 'The Name of Israel': Name
winged iridescent broken sounds of the river on stones
name with Israel and sky! Israel! Name
Echo
sincere tears and cries
Song of divine tenderness
Chalice gifts of the Spirit of His Promises
Etendard
Israel is saved from eternal salvation
Israel! Israel! .
